Board of Ed President comments on son’s murder charge
"It has no bearing on me advocating for children and education."
The president of the board of education spoke publicly today regarding the weekend arrest of his 23-year-old son who now faces a charge of murder in connection with the slaying of a 30-year-old city man in October.
In comments today to the Asbury Park Press, Gregory Hopson, Sr. said “I don’t see where my position as board president has anything to do with what my son could or could not have done. It has no bearing on me advocating for children and education. It would be different if I was the one who committed the crime.”
He said he learned about the allegations at the time of his son’s arrest, the Press reported.
“We have to go through this process,” Hopson told the paper. “My entire career I’ve advocated for children. Whether my son did this or not, my heart does go out to the family. No one truly knows the story.”
Gregory Hopson, Jr. was arrested Friday on charges related to a robbery which occurred days before the Oct. 2 shooting of Ryekill Agostini, who was found by police shot in the head behind the wheel of a vehicle that had collided with another, the Press previously reported.
After taken into custody, Hopson was charged with Agostini’s murder and weapons charges in addition to the robbery charge, with bail set at $3 million, according to the Press report. Bail today was continued at $3 million on the murder charge and set at $175,000 on a weapons charge, the paper has now reported.
