BOE vote on superintendent’s contract renewal unclear
Three board members vote yes, three abstain
The board of education [BOE] voted on renewal of superintendent Denise Lowe’s contract last night and after three members voted yes and three abstained, the result is unclear.
Board president Gregory Hopson and members Gregory Brewington and Sheila Brazile voted in favor of renewing the five-year contract. Gerard Dalton, Barbara Lesinski and Angela Ahbez-Anderson abstained.
BOE member Kevin Michel resigned from the board prior to last night’s meeting. Geneva Smallwood left the meeting before the vote was taken, according to a press release from the district, and Kevin Raines was absent from the meeting.
According to board policy, a majority vote of the full membership is required for appointment of the superintendent. Without Michel, the board membership is eight, and only three members voted yes. Abstentions are not counted as votes according to board policy.
The board attorney is currently determining the implications of the vote, communications officer Christina Coloma said.
“At this time, Superintendent Dr. Lowe will not be discussing or commenting on this subject,” according to the release.
