Campbell will file for mayor, decide later whether to run
Decision will be based on community support and impact on her job
Asbury Park Mayor Myra Campbell has yet to decide whether to seek re-election in November, but she will be submitting the required nominating petitions by the Sept. 2 deadline to allow herself more time to make a final decision.
She would run alone without a ticket of council running mates, she said.
“I was elected last year in July to serve for four years,” she said. “So I would run to fulfill that term.”
Voters last year approved a change of government referendum, which requires a new governing body to be elected this November. One change is that voters will now directly elect the mayor, who will serve as one of the five council members.
Last year, Campbell [shown above, speaking at a climate change event on the Asbury Park boardwalk] ran on the One Asbury ticket with current council members John Moor and Amy Quinn.
She will make a decision by the end of September as to whether she will stay in the race or drop out, she said. The two deciding factors will be the support she receives from the community and whether the race will affect her job. Campbell works in the insurance business and open enrollment season for Medicare health insurance takes place in the height of election season, she said. Her pay is based on number of people she can get enrolled in the program, which is where the majority of her supplemental income comes from, she said.
