First official ticket forms to challenge incumbents
Slate includes former councilman Keady, past BOE member Palmer
The first official ticket for this year’s council election has been announced.
Former board of education member Remond Palmer, former councilman Jim Keady [pictured, at left], Duanne Small [pictured, at right], Nora Hyland and Danny Harris have joined under the name Uniting Asbury. Campaign literature refers to them as “the A-Team.”
“We share a vision with the city of Asbury Park and we want to unite the community,” Keady said today. “We want to unite black, white, rich and poor to be involved in rebuilding and revitalizing the city of Asbury Park.”
Keady and Small have known each other for some time, and started to plan the ticket about six weeks ago.
Keady is the director of a nonprofit organzation called Educating for Justice. He also works in international labor rights advocacy. Hyland is a professor of education at Rutgers University, and Harris works for the Newark school system as an athletic director. Palmer works in the insurance industry.
“I think the team we have represents the city in all quadrants,” Keady said.
Small, a general contractor, hopes to bring about “change in the city,” he said.
“The current administration is more concerned about what’s going on in the redevelopment areas,” Small said. “As a team, we’re concerned about redevelopment but we’re concerned about the city as a whole, not just one part.”
The group’s website, unitingasbury.com, is currently under construction.
So far, Joe Grillo and Councilwoman Sue Henderson have also announced they are running for council, although they have not yet decided on running mates.
