Harvest Fest, Asbury Underground & Asbury Bites
Art, Music, Food, & Artisans collide at event for all the senses
Partnerships between the city’s creative minds will result in a fall celebration for all the senses.
The popular Asbury Park Underground, slated for Oct. 15 and 16 is being held in conjunction with Harvest Fest and Asbury Bites, organizers announced Monday.
Asbury Underground, a series of free acoustic pop-up sets held throughout the city’s downtown galleries, has grown to include sets along the waterfront and outdoor live art demonstrations. The two-day free event, founded by Pat Schiavino, features 100 musicians and 50 visual artists showcased at 30 Asbury Park venues.
“Asbury Park has a long tradition as being the premier destination for original music, but what most people are unaware of, is that it is quickly becoming one of the most concentrated areas for the fine arts as well,” Schiavino said. “We now have about 30 restaurants downtown alone. That is pretty phenomenal growth in a very short time. The whole idea from the inception of Asbury Underground was to bring a broader awareness of just how fertile in all of the arts our City truly is. Art, music, food… it’s our culture.”
The downtown art and music crawl kicks things off at noon Saturday. Musicians will perform at the downtown galleries until 6 p.m.
And by 2 p.m. Asbury Bites, presented by the Asbury Park Downtown Merchants Guild, puts a spotlight on local eateries by partnering with local retailers and entertainment venues to showcase the culinary expertise that’s attracted foodies.
“This is our third Asbury Bites event and we appreciate partnering with Pat Schiavino’s Asbury Underground,” organizer Chris Gonzales said in a written statement. “Visitors to the area will be exposed to our diverse food selection while experiencing our retailers, music and entertainment venues, all in one collaborative effort.”
Sample Bites from At the Table, The Chat & Nibble, Confections of a Rock Star, Dino’s on Main, Food Lube, Juice Beach, Lentil Tree, Medusa Stone-Fired Kitchen, Pasta Volo, Pepe Events Catering, Purple Glaze, and Vintage Subs can be found at Backward Glances, Coil & Co., Etc., Hot Sand, Kur Wellness Studios, Nita Ideas, Old Glory Tattoo, Salt Design Co., Shelter Home, The ShowRoom Cinema, Uncorked, and Words!
From 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, gARTen in vacant lot located at 713 Cookman Ave features battle of bands, DJs and Art. The House of Independents will host a rolling lineup of sound from 6 to 8 p.m., with the after party kicking off at 9 p.m. at The Asbury, located at 210 Fifth Ave.
Harvest Fest kicks things off at noon Sunday in Kennedy Park. A collaborative between the Asbury Fresh and Cross and Orange, the free family-friendly fall event showcases artisan vendors and is expected to feature a food/beer tent, outdoor games, pumpkin painting, a live music stage and food drive.
“We had another hugely successful summer with the Asbury Fresh market thanks to our family of vendors and support of the local community,” said organizer Meghan Armbrecht.” “The Harvest Fest is a way for us to extend our market season and create an event that shows how grateful we are to Asbury Park for embracing us the way it has.
By 1 p.m. Sunday the Asbury Park Underground’s live music lineup kicks off.
“When Pat Schiavino got involved, we couldn’t have been more excited about the possibilities that opened up,” Ambrecht said. “Asbury Underground is becoming an institution in the city and we feel lucky that we could partner with them and make a successful event even more collaborative.”
Over at Toast, 516 Cookman Ave, expect an afternoon of Spoken Word during its “Underground Poets” lineup.
And, when the Harvest Fest/Asbury Underground Kennedy Park events wind up at 6 p.m., the after party switches over to Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten at 527 Lake Avenue where a lineup of bands will perform until 10 p.m.
