Man arrested for swinging machete at woman
Verbal dispute allegedly escalated, victim unharmed
An Asbury Park man allegedly swinging a machete at a woman on Saturday afternoon was arrested for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault and terroristic threats, according to Detective Lt. David DeSane.
Officers responded to a report of a disorderly female at 1239 Washington Avenue at 3:00 p.m., when they encountered the victim, Amanda Shoats, 28, said DeSane in a statement.
Shoats, a resident of the city, said she had been involved in a verbal dispute with a subject later indentified as Lonzie Crawford, 63, DeSane said.
“The verbal dispute escalated to a point where Crawford threatened to cut Shoats. Crawford went into his residence, returned with a machete, and began to swing it at Shoats who retreated into the street,” said DeSane of the allegations leading to Crawford’s arrest.
Shoats was unharmed, DeSane said.
Officers retrieved the machete and arrested Crawford, he said.
Bail was set by Municipal Court Judge Daniel DiBenedetto at $50,000 with no 10 percent option, said DeSane. Crawford was transported to Monmouth County Correctional Institute, he said.
