Man poses as police officer, threatens victim at gunpoint
Two Asbury Park police officers injured during man's arrest
An allegedly intoxicated Edgewater Park man injured two Asbury Park police offers while he was being arrested after he reportedly brandished a handgun and falsely impersonated an officer, police said Friday.
Anthony Kennedy, 26, faces charges of impersonating a police officer, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, receiving stolen property, and eluding, according to Asbury Park Police Deputy Chief Anthony Salerno.
He was also suspected of driving while intoxicated and was charged with driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit to a breath test.
Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, Asbury Park police were alerted to an incident where a man later identified as Kennedy, 26, allegedly threatened another person at gunpoint while claiming he was a police officer before he drove off in a Volkswagen, Salerno said.
Kennedy gave chase after police tracked down a vehicle that matched the Volkswagen’s description in the 400 block of Ridge Avenue. He later fled on foot from the vehicle after police had it surrounded in a dead end street just off Fourth Avenue, he said.
Kennedy resisted officers’ attempts to subdue him, causing two Asbury Park police officers to be injured during his arrest, Salerno said.
A Monmouth County detective located a handgun at the scene, he said.
He was taken to police headquarters and subsequently taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries, said Salerno.
Kennedy was taken to Monmouth County Correctional Institution in lieu of $400,000 bail with no option to post 10 percent.
