Tiki Weekend beckons locals, visitors to boardwalk
'Endless Summer' festival features music, movies, art starting Sept. 28
Labor Day Weekend has come and gone but at the Asbury Park boardwalk, locals and visitors alike can have one last taste of summer at the Endless Summer Tiki Weekend.
This is the second annual Tiki Weekend, according to Amanda DiRobella of boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette. The event began last year as a collaboration between Madison Marquette and restaurateur Marilyn Schlossbach, who owns Langosta Lounge and other area restaurants.
Endless Summer Tiki Weekend is “a way to keep people engaged in the boardwalk and reiterate that we are a year round destination,” DiRobella said.
Tiki festivals have popped up throughout the country, from Lake George, N.Y., to San Diego, Calif., DiRobella said. Event organizers hope Asbury Park’s Tiki Weekend will attract people from all over.
“People love it,” she said of tiki culture. “It hits on so many different genres — dancing, music, art.”
The weekend begins Friday, Sept. 28 with a launch party including a bonfire on the beach and a live drum circle performance. Most of the events over the weekend are free, DiRobella said.
The new Asbury Park Yacht Club bar, near Langosta Lounge, will host an art show all three days.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, a Rodeo Surf Contest will begin at 7 a.m. and include a full day of wave-riding in support of the Jersey Shore Chapter of the surfrider Foundation.
Later that day and on Sunday, Sept. 30, the Wonder Bar will give its Yappy Hour a tiki theme so pets can get in on the fun.
Saturday’s events also include a tiki golf tournament at Asbury 18 Mini Golf on the boardwalk.
On Sunday, attendees can enjoy a pool party at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel and the continuation of the art show in the carousel. Asbury Park retailers will present a vintage fashion show and a Polynesian pinball event hosted by the Silverball Museum Arcarde.
At night, the movies “Endless Summer” and “Blue Hawaii” will be screened on the Second Avenue Beach.
Venues like the Stone Pony and the Wonder Bar will host various musicians.
