Weekly fireworks and bonfires a bust
Arrangements still not finalized for Fourth of July display
Boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette will no longer sponsor the weekly fireworks on Wednesday nights or the Friday night bonfires on the beachfront.
“It was a decision that was made that we were not going to do that investment this year,” said Carrie Turner, director of retail services for Madison Marquette.
Turner said the weekly fireworks show cost the company around $3000 a week.
In addition, plans for the Fourth of July fireworks are still not firmed up, according to Turner.
The Fourth of July fireworks displays in recent years were a joint effort between the city and Madison Marquette, said Turner. The two are currently “in talks” about who will sponsor the event this year, she said.
While Madison Marquette will no longer host the beach bonfires, a different sponsor may take over the event, although not necessarily on a weekly basis, Turner said.
“I do know that at least one of my tenants [on the boardwalk] has expressed interest in perhaps doing a few of [the bonfires] themselves,” said Turner, “because anyone can apply for a permit and do them.”
Turner did not know if anyone else has submitted an application for a permit to continue the bonfires.
Madison Marquette had hosted the weekly fireworks and bonfires for the past four summers, according to Turner.
