13th Annual art show heads to Convention Hall
'Arts Alive' to showcase student art work, live performances
The Asbury Park School District will showcase student work in Convention Hall Tuesday and Wednesday during “Arts Alive – Asbury Park’s 13th Annual Art Showcase.”
The showcase features work created throughout the school year by students from all levels of learning, pre-k through 12th grade. Members of the visual and performing arts department of the school district organize the annual art show, according to a prepared release from the district.
“The music and theatre group performances are exciting and innovative and the artwork of our students is worthy of the label ‘gallery level,’” said Jan Mclaren, showcase coordinator and visual art teacher at Asbury Park Middle School.
“Every year we raise the bar a little higher on the quality of the artwork and performances,” said Mclaren. “Our main goal has always been to evoke a sense of creativity and success in our students, to carry through for the rest of their lives.”
The district has chosen four individuals to judge the students’ work. This year’s judges, according to the news release, include Greg Brewington, a board of education member and retired district art teacher; Sharon Harris, retired principal and retired art supervisor; Su Chapman, City of Asbury Park – Program Developer; and Joy Cappuzzello, graduate of Temple Art School and Graphic artist.
The showcase starts Tuesday, June 4, at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 7:30 p.m. with live performances by students starting at 5:30 p.m., and Wednesday, June 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Admission to the event is free.
