60 new lockers will be added to city beaches this summer
Charge for the rental units sees a $25 increase
Come Memorial Day, even more Asbury Park beach visitors will be able to conveniently store their surfside accoutrements right on the beach.
At least 60 new beach lockers will be added to the already 228 that are split up throughout the First, Fifth, Sunset, Seventh and Eighth avenue beaches, bringing the total count to at least 288, according to Garret Giberson, Sr., Asbury Park’s beach utility manager.
The price for rentals has seen a modest increased of $25, from $175 to $200 for the season, he said.
“We think they are a good buy,” Giberson said. “We think other towns are getting more [money for locker rentals].”
The units measure four feet high, 30 inches wide and 42 inches deep, he said, and there are already 152 people on the waiting list for one.
Renewal letters have been sent out to people who rented lockers last year and the deadline for renewal is May 15, according to Giberson, who said he calls people he has not heard back from to make sure they have a fair chance to renew, just in case they did not receive the notice in the mail. Only about two people have declined renewal so far and the waiting list is contacted on a first-come, first-served basis based on the order people signed up on it, he said.
“I think I’m going to be able to satisfy a good portion of the [waiting] list,” said Giberson.
There are no residency requirements to rent a beach locker in Asbury Park.
Seasonal and daily rates for beach access remain unchanged. Adult season passes [anyone ages 18-61] cost $70, teen passes [ages 13-17] and senior passes [62 and up]. Daily passes are $5 weekdays and $6 weekends and holidays.
Children 12 and under, disabled and active military personnel and their dependents enjoy free beach access in Asbury Park, he said.
Beach access hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends and holidays.
