7-11 clerk faces criminal sexual conduct charge
Man allegedly followed a woman out to the parking lot and assaulted her
A 68-year-old man convenience store clerk has been accused of following a shopper out to her car where he hugged and kissed her, according to a news release from Ocean Township police.
Malkiat Mahal, Wanamassa, was arrested and charged with one count of criminal sexual contact after police responded to a call from a woman who reported she was inappropriately touched by Mahal in the parking lot of the 7-11 on Sunset Avenue in the Wanamassa section of the township, the release said.
The incident took place at 2:23 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
An investigation revealed that the victim was shopping in the store and was followed out to her car by Mahal, who allegedly approached the victim and “began hugging and kissing her,” the release stated. The victim was able to break free from Mahal, get into her car and flee the area to call police, the release said.
Mahal’s bail was set by Municipal Court Judge Timothy McGoughran at $1000.00 with a ten percent option.
Mahal posted bail and was release to await a future court hearing.
