Six months after Sandy, major construction is complete on the Asbury Park Boardwalk, and the city is celebrating with an official ribbon cutting this weekend.

The Grand Re-Opening starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. The first 1,000 people to attend will receive free Asbury Park 2013 daily beach badges, courtesy of the city of Asbury Park.

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the formal ribbon cutting will take place. From 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Asbury Angels plaques will be dedicated. The plaques will be installed on benches as part of the Boardwalk of Fame, which celebrates local musicians.

The Asbury Park High School marching band will perform, along with cheerleaders from the middle school, Chamber of Commerce executive director Jackie Pappas said at the May 1 council meeting.

Also, on Friday, May 17, there will be a reception and ribbon cutting for new signage at the West Side of the train station.

The Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball Foundation will award summer program grants to the Asbury Park Little League, the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County, and the Summertime Surf School. Festivities begin at 6:45 p.m.

The events on Friday and Saturday are being sponsored by the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce.
