Keady says 332 ballots remain uncounted
A-Team consults Monmouth GOP chair John Bennett as attorney
The unofficial election results for the city council race are in — but A-Team candidate Jim Keady says more than 300 vote-by-mail ballots have yet to be counted.
Keady learned that about 332 ballots were set aside, he said, with 80 of those ballots being “discarded because they were not filled out properly. That leaves about 250 that are sitting for a judge to decide on,” he said.
Officials from the Monmouth County Board of Elections could not be reached for comment last night.
In the lead for the five council seats are John Moor, Amy Quinn and Myra Campbell of the One Asbury ticket, and incumbent council members John Loffredo and Sue Henderson of the Forward Asbury ticket, according to preliminary results from the Monmouth County Clerk.
“Our attorney has been made aware of this and we’ve got to fight for those votes,” Keady said. “We have to fight to make sure the 275 to 300 people who cast their ballots in good faith are not disenfranchised.”
Keady and his A-Team running mates have consulted with Monmouth County Republican Chairman and former State Senator John Bennett in the event that they take legal action regarding the ballots. Also running on the A-Team ticket are Duanne Small, Remond Palmer, Nora Hyland and Daniel Harris.
Bennett released a statement Tuesday night saying that he will discuss the returns Wednesday morning and will gather the facts surrounding the approximately 330 vote-by-mail ballots that weren’t counted.
“When nearly 50 percent of the votes by mail are not counted, everyone wants to know why,” Bennett said. “There were many good men and women that sought office and it is important that every vote cast gets counted. If they will not be counted it is only fair for everyone to know why.”
The A-Team ran a massive messenger ballot operation leading up to the election. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office investigated the city’s messenger ballots, and executed a search warrant at the A-Team headquarters this month.
In the days preceding this election, A-Team candidates encouraged their supporters to also vote by provisional ballot in case their vote-by-mail or messenger ballots were challenged, Keady said. Those votes won’t be tabulated for several days.
The highest vote-getter, Moor, garnered 699 votes, with Quinn in second at 693. Both ran on the One Asbury ticket. Their running-mate Campbell got 598. Incumbents John Loffredo and Susan Henderson on the Forward Asbury slate received 640 and 608 votes respectively.
A-Team candidate Keady got 409 votes; Small got 405; Harris garnered 388; Palmer received 381; and Hyland got 359.
Five other candidates also ran ahead of the A-Team slate in the unofficial results. Those candidates were One Asbury’s Joe Woerner with 566 votes and Talesha Crank with 441 votes. From the Forward Asbury ticket, incumbent Kevin Sanders was in sixth place overall with 574 votes, Will Potter received 434 votes and Gregory Hopson got 428 votes.
The Monmouth County Board of Elections had received a total of 640 vote-by-mail ballots by 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, about 275 of which were messenger ballots. In the May 2009 city council election, no voters used messenger ballots.
