Asbury students gear up for inaugural fashion show
'Paris in the spring' selected as theme
Students of the first fashion merchandising class at Asbury Park High School will hold their inaugural fashion show Friday.
The exhibit will feature work from students enrolled in the fashion merchandising class at the high school. The show starts at 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the high school.
The theme of the show is “Paris in the spring,” according to a press release from the district.
During the course, students learned about commercial patterns and how to adapt already made designs into their own. They also learned about how history and politics influence fashion, according to the release.
“This has been a very exciting, wonderful, and sometimes challenging class,” said Ms. Maybelline Hicks, fashion consultant instructor.
“Most of these students had never used a needle and thread or even worked a sewing machine before this class,” said Hicks. “It has really given them many opportunities they had never experienced or learned before.”
The show will be split into three segments. The first segment will showcase sleep wear, street wear and beach wear. The second segment will exhibit a combination of skirts, dresses and slacks. The third segment is an evening wear collection which will feature a ball gown and a skirt designed by students.
Besides crafting their own clothes from scratch, the students also received clothing donations through The Spot. The Spot is a New Jersey school-based youth services program that provides health care, recreational services, job support and learning support to students, according to the district’s website.
The students revamped the clothing that was donated into their own designs, the release said.
“This gave students the opportunity to be creative and put in action what they had learned,” said Hicks.
Ms. Ruby Francis, fashion merchandising course instructor, also taught the student how to use technology in the fashion world.
“Some of the students have already found career paths through this class,” said Hicks. “They have discovered they want to be art illustrators, engineers [and] designers.”
“I am very proud of the work of these students,” said Dr. Denise Lowe, superintendent of schools for the Asbury Park school district. “When I visited their classroom it was very clear that they are very passionate and have truly been inspired to create great things. I look forward to seeing their hard work on Friday.”
