Two board of education members resign
Positions must be filled within 65 days or county names replacements
With only one year remaining in both of their individual terms, Asbury Park Board of Education members Gregory Brewington and Gregory Hopson, Sr. resigned during Tuesday night’s board meeting.
Within the next few days, Board Secretary Geoff Hastings will submit a notice through local newspapers asking candidates wanting to fill the vacancies to write letters of interest, according to Superintendent Denise Lowe.
Interested individuals must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen and live in Asbury Park, Lowe said.
Candidates will be interviewed during the open session of the next board meeting on July 24. Current board members will then vote on which two they will select from the pool of those applying during that same meeting, she said.
If the board cannot come to a decision during the July 24 meeting they can re-advertise, “but the clock is ticking,” Lowe said.
“Those seats have to be filled within 65 days,” said Lowe. “If they don’t decide within 65 days the county superintendent makes the appointment.”
Brewington and Hopson, Sr. made the announcement mere days before the end of Superintendent Lowe’s term on Sunday, June 30. The board voted not to renew Lowe’s current contract in November 2012.
