Myra Campbell, who was elected on May 14 to her first term on the City Council, was appointed Asbury Park’s Mayor at the council reorganization meeting at noon today.

The vote was 3-2.

Voting for Campbell [above at center] were reelected incumbents John Loffredo [above at left] and Susan Henderson [at right]. Campbell provided the third vote.

Voting against Campbell were her running mates on the One Asbury ticket, newly-elected council members John Moor and Amy Quinn [shown below as Campbell was sworn in as Mayor].

Incumbent Susan Henderson was appointed Deputy Mayor with the same three-vote majority as Campbell. Moor and Quinn voted no on Henderson.

Campbell told the crowd at the meeting that she sought the post because it gave the city the opportunity to have its first female African-American Mayor.

Campbell supported Henderson for Deputy Mayor after her running mates declined that post, she told the at-times raucous crowd.

Moor had expected to be named Mayor, as his ticket won a council majority and he was the high vote-getter in the election — which is traditionally the person named Mayor in the city.
