Report: Long-time former city manager dies
Samuel J. Addeo, 65, had worked in Asbury's city hall from 1972 to 1993
The Asbury Park Press is reporting that former Asbury Park city manager Samuel J. Addeo has died at the age of 65. He had lived in Georgia for many years, the Press reported.
Addeo served in the city manager post from 1980 to1993, and joined the city government in 1972, an article by Nancy Shields of the Press stated. Addeo’s era as city manager included the city’s first run at waterfront redevelopment in the 1980s, and its stalled aftermath.
In Asbury Park’s form of government, the city manager is a powerful chief executive officer with the power to hire and fire most employees. Technically, the elected officials on the council cannot even communicate with other city employees in the administration without going through the manager first.
Addeo was known as a colorful personality. After he had left his Asbury Park post, he at one point had moved to the Caribbean and told others that he was working as a consultant to the government of Bonaire.
“…Sam was always a fun kind of guy outside the professional arena,” long-time city employee Garrett Giberson told Shields.
