Arrests in attack and robbery by group at food store
One suspect charged in second incident two days later
Arrests were made during the weekend in connection with a July 30 robbery at a food store on Springwood Avenue in Asbury Park, in which six suspects allegedly attacked the victim before removing items from his pockets, according to Detective Lt. David DeSane.
Police became involved after patrol officers responded to a report of a fight inside the Mr. Pizza food store located at 1500 Springwood Ave., DeSane said in a statement.
The officers located a twenty year old male with numerous facial injuries, and subsequent investigation revealed that the victim had been attacked upon entering the store by six subjects who punched and kicked the victim before removing items from his pockets, said DeSane.
The subjects were identified through a review of video surveillance and complaints were signed for robbery against the suspects, he said. The following city residents were arrested in connection with the incident over the weekend: Quadare Butler, 19, Jaqhan Allah,19, Todd Howard, 20, Daishon Smith, 22, and a seventeen year old male juvenile, according to DeSane. A sixth city resident remains at large, he said.
The adults were transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Institute in Freehold with bail set at $250,000 with no 10 percent option, DeSane said. The juvenile was transported to the Middlesex Youth Detention Center, he said.
One of the suspects arrested over the weekend — Quadare Butler — faces additional charges stemming from a separate August 1 incident involving an alleged robbery at gunpoint, according to DeSane.
On August 1, patrol officers responded to a report of a subject shot in front of the Asbury Park Deli, 11 Atkins Ave., said DeSane. Officers located an eighteen year old male who reported he had been robbed at gunpoint, but that no shots had been fired, he said.
The victim reported he had been approached in the alleyway between 9 and 11 Atkins Ave. by two males, said DeSane. One subject allegedly pointed a handgun at the victim while the second forcibly removed several items from the victim’s pockets before fleeing the area, he said.
The subsequent investigation revealed one of the subjects to be Butler, already incarcerated in connection with the July 30 incident, DeSane said. An additional complaint was signed against Butler charging him with armed robbery and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, with bail set at $250,000 with no 10 percent option, said DeSane.
The investigation is continuing in reference to the second subject in the August 1 incident, DeSane said. Anyone with information should contact Detective Gabe Carrasquillo at 732-775-2936.
