The Asbury Park Board of Education is still in the search to fill two seats vacant since June when two members resigned, and the last day to apply is next week.

The initial deadline of July 17 was extended to Aug. 21 “to allow potential applicants more time to submit letters of interest,” Chanta L. Jackson, a spokesperson for the district, said in an email.

Six people have applied for the positions, she said. The board will interview all of the candidates at their next meeting Aug. 28 and may make a decision that night.

Interested individuals must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen and live in Asbury Park.

The vacancies must be filled before the 65 day grace period ends on Aug. 30 or the county superintendent will make the appointments, former Superintendent Denise Lowe previously told the Sun.

With only one year remaining in both of their individual terms, Board of Education members Gregory Brewington and Gregory Hopson, Sr. resigned at the June 26 meeting. They made the announcement four days before Lowe’s term ended June 30. The board voted not to renew Lowe’s contract in November 2012.
