Surfside Food Drive to seek non-perishables donations
Labor Day weekend event will feature Star Wars enthusiasts, local bands
As the end of summer approaches, those who have occupied seasonal homes in the Asbury Park area and find themselves left with a pantry stocked full of food are invited to donate the items to a good cause.
National nonprofit Move For Hunger will host its fifth annual Surfside Food Drive and Concert Series to benefit the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean counties Labor Day weekend.
From Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, area residents and beachgoers are urged to bring non-perishable food items to the Move For Hunger tent on the Second Avenue boardwalk between noon and 5 p.m.
“The Surfside Food Drive is a great way for summer residents to clear out the kitchens and pantries of seasonal properties while making a difference for the less fortunate on the Jersey Shore,” said Adam Lowy, executive director of Move For Hunger, in a prepared release.
Last year, almost 3,200 pounds of non-perishable food items were collected — enough to provide 2,667 meals to families and individuals in Monmouth and Ocean counties, according to Lowy.
On Saturday, Move For Hunger will be joined by members of the North East Remnant, a team of local Star Wars enthusiasts in screen-accurate replica costumes. The third annual Surfside Cornhole Tournament will take place on Sunday at The Stone Pony from 1 to 4 p.m. Scheduled to perform throughout the weekend are local bands Enjoy!, Under Pressure, the B-Street band and more.
Anyone who donates non-perishable food items over the weekend will receive a free Surfside 2013 T-shirt, courtesy of event sponsors, and will be entered into a raffle to win other prizes and giveaways.
The event is free and open to the public.
