Public hearing on budget amendment, discussion to create several committees on agenda
The city council is scheduled to meet tonight in council chambers at City Hall. A closed executive session will start at 5 p.m., followed by a workshop session at 6 p.m. and a regular council meeting at 7 p.m.
Several special applications for liquor licenses are on the agenda. They include an application to extend Johnny Mac’s license to the outside premises for Labor Day weekend and an application to extend Old Man Rafferty’s and Brickwall Tavern’s licenses for a street fair. Two license expansions are also included. One is for the expansion of Bond Street Bar to include 639 Cookman Ave., and the other is for the expansion of the Asbury Lanes license to an adjoining lot where The Fast Lane building once stood. An application for a person-to-person transfer of Old Man Rafferty’s license has been carried over from the Aug. 7 meeting agenda.
Also on the regular meeting agenda is a public hearing on an amendment to use transitional aid funds provided by the state toward a tax levy. After the hearing, the council may take action on the amendment.
Public participation takes place at the beginning of the regular meeting. Other items on the agenda for both the workshop and regular meeting include:
• A resolution to appoint nine special officers to the Asbury Park Police Department.
• Resolutions to refund a portion of taxes for 614 Prospect Ave. and 1201 Springwood Ave. due to overpayment.
• A resolution to purchase traffic signal materials under a state contract.
• A presentation by Jackie Pappas, executive director of the chamber of commerce, on adding additional welcome signs to the transportation center.
• A presentation by Donald Sammet, the city’s redevelopment and planning director, to set a special meeting date to discuss the state proposed redesign of Main Street.
• Several presentations by City Engineer Joe Cunha. They include a contract for decorative street lighting and traffic materials and a resolution for authorization to bid for landscape engineers for Springwood Park.
• A discussion on the creation of several committees, including a web/tech committee, a budget committee, a parking committee, a quality of life/public safety committee, a code enforcement committee and a new hire/review committee.
In executive session, the council will discuss contract negotiations for an amendment to the Waterfront Redevelopment Agreement requested by Asbury Partners/iStar. They will also discuss a personnel issue that relates to the extension of the chief municipal finance officer’s appointment.
