Derby rolls to a new location, at least for now
Sept. 28 bout at Convention Hall cancelled
Facing uncertainty as to the future availability of Convention Hall, The Jersey Shore Roller Girls have decided to search for an alternate venue to hold their monthly bouts.
“We are sad to lose our home with Convention Hall, we have been bouting at that venue since February 2008,” Kim Hartman, media and public relations director for the Jersey Shore Roller Girls, said in an email to the Sun.
Waterfront redeveloper Madison Marquette, who currently owns and operates Convention Hall, “has been wonderful to us over the last six years,” Hartman said.
In the email, Hartman cites “issues that Madison Marquette is facing with the City of Asbury Park and the potential structural issues following the partial roof collapse at the Anchors Bend,” as the league’s reasons for the move out of Convention Hall.
However, a permanent move may not fully be set in stone, according to Madison Marquette officials.
“We love the Jersey Shore Roller Girls and unfortunately because we could not promise them the use of Convention Hall they decided to look for another location for their bouts,” according to Christopher Femiano, director of operations for Madison Marquette. “We will continue to support the [Jersey Shore Roller] Girls and look forward to the day when we can welcome them back to Convention Hall.”
The roller girls are currently in the process of working out a deal with an alternative venue, and declined to release further details at the time.
“As soon as the venue is secured we will make the announcement,” Hartman said. “We are excited at the possibilities this new venue may give to our league and the potential for new fans.”
Hartman is, at the time, unable to say whether the league will make the move a permanent one.
Saturday’s bout between the Murder Beach Milita and the Right Coast Rollers has been cancelled, according to the league’s website.
