Editor, the Asbury Park Sun,

The Deal Lake Commission [DLC] would like thank the 200 plus folks who attended our Oct. 26 cleanup.  The Deal Lake cleanup was the biggest and best in recent memory. We removed tons of debris not just from the main lake but from Sunset Lake and Fireman’s Pond, which are part of the Deal Lake watershed.

Specific thanks go out to these groups and companies that helped with the event:

Friends of Deal Lake (FODL)

Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund

Jeseycares.org

Friends of Fireman’s Pond

NJ Transit (provided safety on the tracks)

Asbury Park,  Allenhurst and Ocean Township public works departments

Monmouth University BIG DAY Event Participants (100 students)

Monmouth University cheerleading squad

Monmouth University Outdoors Club

Asbury Rotary Club

Boy Scout Troop 71

Our neighbors along the lake

The Coaster

World Volkswagen

A special thanks to our friends, the Monmouth University Outdoors Club, who are always eager to get wet, cold, and dirty for a day of lake cleaning. These kids were just amazing and have been helping out for the last seven years.

THANKS!

Also a big thanks to Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund which came through with  volunteers and supplies for the clean-up for their “Sandy Service Day.” Deal Lake was hammered by Sandy just a year ago, and the Deal Lake Commission with the help of NJDEP are still working to remove sand and debris that Sandy left behind.  Deal Lake has come a long way since Sandy due the hands-on efforts of the community, but there is still more to do to remove trees, sand, and heavy debris on the bottom.

We can use the help of the rowing & boating community that enjoys the lake for exercise, training and fishing.  I call on the rowers and boaters to organize an effort to get the visible debris (small trees, bushes and a few rods sticking up) that would make the lake a safer place for all boaters.  Thanks.

For photos of the cleanup and information on the lake please visit the Deal Lake Commission website.

Again, thanks for making Deal Lake, NJ’s largest coastal lake, cleaner.

Don Brockel, Chairman, DLC
