Asbury Park Board of Education election results
Newcomers Breech and Lowell win seats
The Asbury Park school board election returns are in. According to the unofficial results from the Monmouth County Clerk, newcomers Connie Breech and Corey Lowell will join the board in January while three incumbents will retain their seats.
Incumbent Nicolle D. Harris was re-elected to a full three-year term. Current board members Kenneth Saunders, Jr. and Felicia Simmons were elected to one-year unexpired terms. Incumbent Qzeena Taylor did not win re-election to a full term and current board member Arva M. Council will not retain her seat.
Nine candidates were in the running for the five available seats, making a majority of the seats on the nine member board up for contest. The seats were split between three full three-year terms and two one-year unexpired terms.
Five candidates were in the running for the full terms. They were Breech, Council, Harris, Lowell and Taylor.
The three highest vote-getters won full terms. The votes for the full terms are divided among the five candidates as follows:
• Nicolle D. Harris is in the lead with 869 votes, or 22.38 percent.
• Connie Sue Breech is the second highest vote-getter, with 833 votes, or 21.45 percent.
• Corey Lowell is presently in third, with 797 votes, or 20.53 percent.
• Arva M. Council has received 697 votes, or 17.95 percent.
• Qzeena Taylor has received 588 votes, or 15.14 percent.
• 99 write-in votes were cast.
For the two one-year unexpired terms, incumbents Saunders and Simmons were listed on the ballot while Calvin Anderson and Carol Jones sought to win by write-in votes. The top two vote-getters won one-year terms. The votes for those two seats are currently divided as follows:
• Kenneth Saunders has received 1,084 votes, or 46.74 percent.
• Felicia Simmons has received 957 votes, or 41.27 percent.
• There were a total of 278 write-in votes, representing 11.99 percent.
Members will be sworn-in to their positions during the reorganization meeting scheduled for Jan. 7, 2014, according to the school board website.
