The Asbury Park Fire Department [APfd]  responded to the call alerting them of the incident minutes after 7 a.m. Saturday morning, according to APFD Chief Kevin Keddy.

The driver appears to have continued heading east on Eighth Avenue instead of turning onto Kingsley Street, he said.

An overhead door and driveway at the location lines up with the Eighth Avenue, Keddy said. The avenue ends at the intersection of Kingsley Street.

The cab penetrated the garage door, entered the facility and wedged itself between two storage tanks that hold carbon filtration pellets, he said.

The vehicle’s only passenger was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, he said. The driver of the vehicle was unharmed.

Keddy was unable to comment on whether the driver was under any influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

Asbury Park police are currently investigating the incident.

Members of the APFD are working to safely remove the vehicle from the location without causing further damage to the tanks.

“If they can pull it straight out they will,” Keddy said.  Otherwise, they may have to cut the vehicle to dislodge it.

The driver “hit a pretty big masonry support beam, but there doesn’t appear to be any other major damage to the site,” he said.

Most of the APFD members have special Urban Search and Rescue training for incidents such as these. The training  handles incidents like building collapses and confined space rescue training, he said.

“Calls like this are not common, but we get them from time to time,” Keddy said.

The team assisted firefighters in Rumson about a month ago in response to a car that crashed into the basement of a house, according to Keddy.
