Kafele to speak at Black History Month kickoff event
'He really pushes the education of young, African American men'
The Second Baptist Church’s Men’s Ministry Christian Education Department and Youth Ministry will host a Black History Month celebration and men’s health fair on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Principal Baruti Kafele will deliver the keynote address at the celebration.
Kafele is a “Hall of Fame” urban public school educator with over 20 years of experience in the field. Under his leadership as school principal, Newark Tech went from a low-performing school to national acclaim, which included U.S. News and World Report Magazine recognizing it as one of America’s best high schools, according to his website.
Kafele [shown at right] is a “dynamic speaker, specifically speaking on the urban education of minority groups with special attention to male students,” said Daniel Harris III, Men’s Ministry group chairman. “He really pushes the education of young, African American men.”
The men’s health fair and breakfast runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Participants will have their blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index calculated and receive a stroke risk assessment. The event is sponsored by the Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
At noon, the Black History Month kickoff celebration will begin in the main sanctuary of the church, located at 124 Atkins Ave.
Various singing, dancers, and poets will also perform at the event, in celebration of black history, Harris said.
Both events are free and open to the public.
