The Asbury Park City Council selected an agency on Wednesday to start recoupment of the approximately 1.2 million dollars the city is owed in past due municipal court fees.

The vote was 5-0.

Out of the six companies that submitted proposals, Austin, Texas-based collection agency Municipal Services Bureau [MSB] was chosen and given a one year contract, city Attorney Frederick Raffetto announced at Wednesday’s council meeting.

The firm will be paid through a 22 percent collection fee that is added on to the amount overdue to the court. Within the first 100 days of service, MSB will rebate 10 percent of the collection fee back to the city, Raffetto said.

After a year the city will have an opportunity to extend or renew the contract for two additional one year periods on the same terms, according to Raffetto.

The company was also vetted by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts, Raffetto said.

MSB has provided their services to ten other New Jersey municipalities, they are Freehold, Marlboro, Pennasauken, Washington, Glassboro, Oaklyn, Springfield, Parsippany, Downe and Commercial, he said.
