City receives $900,000 state grant for boardwalk lighting
New poles, LED lights will be installed the entire length of boardwalk
Asbury Park was announced as one of four New Jersey municipalities selected to receive round one grant funds for streetscape and waterfront improvements, according to a news release from the state’s Economic Development Authority [EDA].
The grant totals $926,070, Virginia Pellerin, communications officer for the EDA, confirmed. It will see the old conventional highway style poles and light fixtures replaced with new energy efficient LED lights. In addition to replacing existing lighting, the city will extend lighting on the boardwalk north of Convention Hall, the release states.
Funds come through the EDA-administered Neighborhood and Community Revitalization [NCR] Program. The four selected municipalities are Highlands, Asbury Park, Keansburg and Sea Isle City.
A total of $10 million in grants of $125,000 to $1.5 million per project will be provided for “Main Street” revitalization improvements to streetscapes, lighting and sidewalks along with façade enhancements, code-related and other physical upgrades to commercial areas in support of the recovery of economic activity in commercial corridors in Sandy-impacted towns and cities throughout the State.
The project will now move on for federally required environmental reviews by the DEP.
