Ocean Twp police to participate in U Drive, U Text, U Pay
Will enforce "zero tolerance" distracted driving laws in April
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Township of Ocean Police Department is stepping up efforts to persuade drivers to put down their phones as part of a national texting enforcement crackdown.
Starting April 1 and continuing throughout the month, the department will be conducting a spring traffic safety initiative, “U-Drive, U-Text, U-Pay,” according to a release from the department.
Officers will be on the lookout for hazardous moving violations, targeting vehicles where the operator’s actions are distracted, aggressive or impaired, the release said. The initiative includes a “zero tolerance” policy for motorists using cell phones or similar electronic devices.
The locations of this initiative will be primarily focused on a combination of high-traffic and high-hazard intersections or roadways within the township, the release stated.
In 2012 alone, 3,328 were killed in distracted driving crashes, according to the Distracted Driving website.
