City man charged with robbing woman at gunpoint
Man later fled into an occupied home when police located him
An Asbury Park resident is accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint and later entering a random residence to hide after police located him.
Abybakr Shabazz, 20, of Dewitt Avenue, allegedly approached a female victim early Monday morning with a small caliber handgun and demanded money in the 10 block of Ridge Avenue, according to Capt. Anthony Salerno.
The woman threw her purse at Shabazz, ran away and called the police shortly after the incident had taken place around 3 a.m, he said. Shabazz removed money from the purse and fled the site of the incident, Salerno said.
Police officers Francis Sangi and Michael Boone located a man that fit the victim’s description at the dead end of DeWitt Ave, but when the man spotted police he fled into a nearby occupied residence on the block, he said. Police entered the residence and apprehended the man without incident, who was later positively identified as Shabazz, Salerno said.
Police officers Stephen McCarthy, Jesse Kendle, Thomas Gogan and Sgt. Lisa Smith, who responded to assist Sangi and Boone, found a small caliber handgun in Shabazz’s possession, he said.
As a result of the investigation, Det. Daniel Kowsaluk charged Shabazz with robbery, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, armed burglary and possession of CDS [under 50g of marijuana], Salerno said.
He was transferred to Monmouth County Jail where he is being held on $510,000 bail with no option to post 10 percent, as set by Judge Honora O’Brien Kilgallen.
