Machete-weilding man indicted for assault, weapons possession
Charges stem from an alleged verbal dispute that happened last year
A 64-year-old Asbury Park resident accused of swinging a machete at a woman after a verbal disagreement they were having escalated has been indicted.
A Monmouth County Grand Jury handed up an indictment Wednesday charging Lonzie Crawford, 64, Washington Avenue, with one count each of third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and third-degree terroristic threats.
The charges stem from an August 2013 incident wherein Asbury Park Police responded to a report of a disorderly female at 1239 Washington Avenue at 3:00 p.m.
When police arrived, the found the victim, a 28-year-old Amanda Shoats. Shoats told police she and Crawford were engaged in verbal dispute that escalated, causing Crawford to threaten to cut her with a machete he had retrieved from his house at some point during the argument.
Shoats was unharmed in the incident.
At the time of the incident, bail was set by Municipal Court Judge Daniel DiBenedetto at $50,000 with no 10 percent option. Crawford was then 63.
