One week from today, the Kula Café will celebrate its first anniversary operating out of Asbury Park’s Springwood Center.

Anniversary festivities include an open house featuring top New Jersey jazzmen from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by the spring start-up of Thursday night live blues from 7 to 10 p.m, according to a news release from café owners Interfaith Neighbors.

Musicians Mark Cohn on keyboards, Jimmy Givens on drums, Dorian Parreott on saxophone and vocals, and Mark Chernoff on saxophone will provide the open house entertainment.

Chef Wendy Escobedo [shown above] will feature a Cajun menu. There is a $5 donation for the evening entertainment.

The café has stood front and center in the ongoing revitalization of Asbury Park’s West Side.

Interfaith Neighbors recently announced a second economic initiative to be created on land adjacent to the café – the Kula Urban Farm enterprise selling plants, vegetables and leafy greens for profit with a portion of the farm to be used as a community entrepreneurial garden.

The Kula Café is located at 1201 Springwood Ave. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
