“Dreamgirls” musical opens to crowd of 150
Two performances of high school production remain
The Asbury Park Drama Club’s production of “Dreamgirls” opened Thursday to a crowd of about 150 people, leaving two more performances Friday and Saturday nights.
“We’re very pleased,” said Chanta L. Jackson, communications coordinator for the district. “We’re expecting larger crowds tonight and tomorrow.”
“Dreamgirls,” based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown and Jackie Wilson, follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago called “The Dreamettes,” who become superstars. The musical is adapted from the Broadway play that opened at the Imperial Theatre in New York City in 1981.
The production includes two acts with one short 15 minute intermission.
A minimalist set design utilizes projected images of several locations along with props, allowing the performance of the actors to stand out.
All performances take place at the Asbury Park High School Auditorium. Showtime for all three nights is at 7 p.m. Tickets are free for faculty and students, and $5 for the general public.
