Community Action Network meets tomorrow
May meeting dubbed 'Spring Summit to End Violence'
The Asbury Park Community Action Network [AP CAN] will host their May monthly meeting Saturday, May 10 at St. Stephen’s AME Zion church.
Organizers are calling the meeting the “Spring Summit to End Violence.” It begins at 11 a.m.
The Asbury Park Community Action Network [AP CAN] is a grassroots initiative that seeks to address issues of violence in the city led by member of the city clergy.
The grassroots campaign was established by Pastor Derinzer Johnson and retired Asbury Park Police Lt. George Corbin, who in November brought community stakeholders together for a Summit to End Violence, inviting law enforcement officials, politicians, business owners and other city stakeholders together to address what they believe are the underlying causes of violence in Asbury Park: health, law enforcement, jobs, housing and education and family services.
Six subcommittees aligned with those causes meet on a monthly basis to create and implement social service initiatives in the city to help mitigate the problem of violent crime. Most recently, the group created a Parent University, offering free classes that address topics and issues many parents struggle with while raising children.
All area residents, including families and children along with other community stakeholders, are invited to attend.
Meeting topics include education, housing, jobs, family, public safety and health.
St. Stephen’s is located at 1001 Springwood Ave.
