Academy welcomes new director of ed., teams with Kula Café for open mic
With the addition of a new director of education, Broadway talent to increase students’ exposure to professional talent, and a partnership with Kula Cafe to offer teen open mic music sessions at the restaurant, Lakehouse Music Academy continues to grow.
The progressive music school recently welcomed Robert Lamont [shown above] as director of education. Robert is a music and theater educator, administrator and a Broadway musician who works in the greater New York City area, according to a news release from the school.
A veteran New York City public school teacher, Lamont is a founding faculty member of Gramercy Arts High School in Manhattan and specialist in musical theater. He is also a composer and an alumnus of the Advanced BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop. As a musical director, he has conducted musicals in theaters around the nation, toured internationally and has had the privilege of working with such diverse artists as Paul Anka, Marc Anthony, Carol Burnett, Nanette Fabray, Wynonna Judd, Patti LaBelle, and Duncan Sheik, among many others.
In addition to a comprehensive summer schedule of weeklong music performance camps, Robert is introducing a Triple Threat Musical Theatre Intensive that takes place July 7-11, 2014. To be a Triple Threat is to master the technical skill and artistic expression of singing, dancing and acting — the goal of every musical theater actor. This program gives young actors an in-depth look at all three skillsets with core training vital to both performance and audition.
Broadway Veteran Annie Golden will join the students sharing her insights and experience to take their craft to the next level. Golden is presently on Broadway in “Violet,” which received a Tony nomination for “best revival.” She previously starred in Broadway’s “Xanadu,” “The Full Monty,” “Assassins” and “Ah, Wilderness!” She has also in films opposite Jim Carey and Ewan McGregor.
She has a recurring role in Orange is the New Black and her numerous TV appearances include Law & Order, Cheers and Miami Vice.
In addition, the academy, along with the Kula Café, will offer teen open mic events starting Sunday, May 18. Sign up begins at 11 a.m. Microphones and a piano will be provided and youths are encouraged to bring their own guitars.
The café, located at 1201 Springwood Avenue, will offer brunch specials for those that come to take in the sounds of the open mic performances.
