A van caught fire Tuesday morning as the driver was en route to an Asbury Park convenience store.

The driver and owner of the van, Larry Daniels, said he noticed the front of his 2002 Dodge van was ablaze as he pulled up to Tiki Grill, a convenience store located at the south west corner of Monroe Avenue and Langford Street.

His wife, who declined to give her name, was sitting in the front passenger seat in the vehicle at the time, smelled the fire and then noticed flames coming through the front floorboard near the engine and screamed, “Larry, look! Fire!” she said.

Asbury Park Firefighters responded to the scene at approximately 8:45 a.m. and had the fire under control “within minutes,” according to Fire Marshall Garrett Giberson.

Both passengers were unharmed in the incident. The van is totaled and is scheduled to be towed away from the scene.

The cause of the engine compartment fire is as yet unknown.

Daniels is an Asbury Park resident and a  local contractor, he said. The tools and equipment in the back of the van were unharmed in the incident.
