Local humane society waiving $100 adoption fee this weekend
Maddie's Fund will pay shelter $500 to $2000 for each adopted animal
The Associated Humane Society of Tinton Falls, which serves as Asbury Park’s animal control, is waiving their adoption fee this weekend.
On Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. qualified homes may adopt a pet from Associated Humane Societies’ Tinton Falls shelter without paying the $100 adoption fee. Adoptions include free microchip and spay or neuter services for cats and dogs.
“We have over 60 dogs on the floor right now, including about a 10 “smalls,” which are our 10-pounders, and probably 50 cats, including about a dozen kittens,” said Lori Lane, the location’s volunteer coordinator, who is herself a volunteer.
The event is sponsored by Maddie’s Adoption Days, which helps rescue organizations around the country find homes for more animals, including senior animals and those with treatable medical conditions, according to their website. The goal of the adoption event is to give all healthy, senior, and treatable shelter dogs and cats a second chance.
Maddie’s Fund will pay the humane society $500 for each adoption of a young and healthy cat or dog under the age of 7, $1,000 for each adoption involving a dog or cat who is 7 years of age or older or who has been treated for one or more treatable medical conditions, and $2,000 for each adoption involving a dog or cat who is 7 years of age or older and who has been treated for one or more treatable medical conditions. It is the first year the Tinton Falls location will participate in the event and she is hopeful they will be able to get at least 20 of the dogs adopted, she said.
“If I could get 20 dogs adopted, I would be thrilled,” she said.
Lane recently spoke with employees from the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City, and found out that they successfully adopted out 55 dogs and “a large amount of cats” in the course of one weekend when they participated in the program last year, she said.
Several dogs up for adoption were rescued from Asbury Park homes, including some from a recent drug bust, she said.
“Asbury Park, unfortunately, happens to be one of our better customers — if you want to say it that way,” she said. The location also serves as the animal control unit for over 30 municipalities in the county, she said.
Adoption forms can be found at this link, printed, and filled out prior to arriving at the shelter to help speed up the adoption process.
The Associated Humane Society is located at 2960 Shafto Rd. in Tinton Falls.
