ReVision Theatre to open curtain on new location
Will rent the former Greek Orthodox Church on Grand Avenue
Asbury Park’s ReVision theatre company is moving to a new location — the former Greek Orthodox Church at 700 Grand Ave. — just in time for its fifth season.
The church was built in 1949, according to a press release from ReVision. On April 1, its parishioners moved to a new church in Ocean Township to accommodate their growing congregation. The church building is now up for sale, but ReVision will rent it for the next four months, at least.
ReVision Theatre has operated since 2008 in the Carousel House on the boardwalk, putting on two to four shows per season.
“We’re very excited that we have a new venue,” artistic director Bob Angelini said. “It’s a new season and we’re going to bring some great theatre here this summer and beyond.”
The company is moving from the Carousel because because boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette has scheduled other events for the building.
“We were looking for a smaller space,” Angelini said. “We were looking a long time. It was very difficult to find a place that had air-conditioning, bathrooms and a place to rehearse and a space for the stage.”
The church has ample space for a black-box rehearsal space as well as the stage, Angelini said. Theatre-goers will sit in pews for now, until the arrangement is made more permanent.
Although ReVision is taking over the building, a soup kitchen will still operate out of a portion of the structure.
“We decided to keep the soup kitchen going,” Angelini said. “We didn’t want to interfere with that.”
The company is hosting a Season Kickoff Party on Thursday, June 14, at the church at 7:30 p.m., where they will unveil their new season — including a fifth-anniversary retrospective concert, a musical and, for the first time, a play.
ReVision Theatre is a professional company with equity players, Angelini said.
