Asbury Park teen charged in Tuesday stabbing incident

Verbal altercation escalated into physical one during backyard BBQ

Asbury Park Police have identified individual taken in custody following a stabbing that occurred on Springwood Avenue Tuesday as 19-year-old Tyhiem “Slim” McGhee.

McGhee, a Borden Avenue resident, is accused of stabbing a 42-year-old Asbury Park resident after the two got into a verbal altercation that turned physical during a barbecue being held in the rear yard of an address in the 1400 block of Springfield Avenue, according to Deputy Chief Anthony Salerno.

During the physical altercation, the 42-year old victim suffered a minor laceration and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he received treatment for his injury, Salerno said.

Police took McGhee into custody in connection with the incident shortly after it occurred, he said.

McGhee was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and was taken to Monmouth County Correctional Institution in lieu of $25,000 bail.
