The Asbury Park Republican Committee has elected Charles P. Smentkowski, Sr. as their new chairman.

“I’m honored that the committee has selected me to represent such a great group of dedicated republicans,” Smentkowski said in a statement sent to the Sun.

Smentkowski is a former Asbury Park Police officer and retired lieutenant from the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office.

The committee has also added former congressional candidate, Ernesto Cullari, to the committee and is looking to fill other vacancies.

In the statement, Smentkowski also thanked former Chairperson Louise Murray for “input and advise” he now holds close to his heart.

“With the direction of newly elected County Chairman, [Sheriff] Shaun Golden, we look to do great things,” he said.
