New design gallery ‘S.alt Design Co.’ to open on Cookman Avenue
'We specialize in a traditional-meets-modern style'
A new furniture and interior design store is about to join the ranks of new businesses along Asbury Park’s downtown Cookman Avenue.
S.alt Design Co., is an interior design gallery whose style combines authentic, classic design principles and mixes them with a modern, industrial edge that is inspired by the simplicity of living at the beach, according to business owner Sarah Church [shown at right, with her dog Kona].
“We specialize in a traditional-meets-modern style,” said Church. “Think everything from reclaimed wood with industrial steel accents to crisp, white Carrara marble.”
Church aims for an Aug. 1 opening.
S.alt stands for Sarah’s Alternative, a name derived from Church’s decision to change careers after seven years in the corporate world trading equity derivatives for Morgan Stanley.
Church said she discovered she’d “lost the passion” that drove her prior success and decided in that moment “life is too short not to be doing what you love.”
While Church may not have any formal design training, she has always loved design. Besides helping a few friends and family members achieve their interior design ideas, she and grew up watching her father build out spaces as a contractor, she said.
S.alt will carry high-end design elements from furniture to lighting, wall coverings, cabinetry, tile, countertops and more, she said.
In addition to being able to walk in the store and choose a piece, Church, 28, will also offer complementary “design concierge” service to accommodate customers who have an idea in mind for how they want their space to look but lack the time to scour the internet or go from store-to-store on a hunt for the items to match their mind’s eye.
Once Church meets with the customer and has an idea of how they would like to curate the space, she will do the majority of research and leg work to meet customers’ needs, which is something different than what the corporate competition currently offers, she said.
“We are a one-stop shopping boutique with the added benefit of a high level of customer service,” Church said.
About 99 percent of Church’s inventory in the roughly 1,800 square foot space will be U.S. made.
