“A-Team” is second full slate to file for City Council elections
Palmer, Small run again with three new candidates
Another full ticket, the “A-Team,” has filed to run in the Asbury Park City Council elections.
All five council seats are up for grabs in the November 4 election and it will be the first time in the city’s history voters will directly elect their mayor.
On the “A-Team” ticket, former Board of Education member Remond Palmer, of 701 Asbury Ave., has filed to run for mayor.
Joining him on the slate are Duanne Small, [shown at right] of 1304 Mattison Ave., Rosetta “Ella” Johnson, of 1509 1/2 Monroe Ave., Derrick Grant, of 1300 Summerfield Avenue, and current Asbury Park Board of Education member Kenneth Saunders, Jr., of 109 Ridge Avenue, whose term on the school board is up at the end of the year.
Palmer and Small ran together on the same ticket in the May 2013 municipal election, but both were unable to secure enough votes to win spots on the council.
Voters last year approved a change of government referendum, which requires a new governing body to be elected this November. Current council was sworn in July 1.
The change moved moved the city’s non-partisan municipal elections from May to November.
One candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the popular vote to be elected mayor. If no candidate gets over 50 percent of the vote on election day, the top two candidates will go head-to-head in a runoff election four weeks later. That will require the winner get a majority, either in the first round or the runoff.
At least two council members must win more than 50 percent of the popular vote. If fewer than two candidates win 50 percent of the popular vote, there are provisions for a runoff to be held in December.
Nominating petitions for the November 2014 municipal elections must be submitted to the city clerk’s office by 5 p.m. today.
Elections will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4. If necessary, runoffs will be held Dec. 2, according to City Clerk Steve Kay.
