Schlossbach files for council seat
Entrepreneur seeks a 'United Community for Asbury'
Local restaurateur Marilyn Schlossbach has filed run for a seat on the Asbury Park City Council in the November elections.
All five council seats are up for grabs in the November 4 election and it will be the first time in the city’s history voters will directly elect their mayor.
“United Community for Asbury” is Schlossbach’s campaign slogan.
Schlossbach, of 1321 Second Ave. [at right], owns a string of restaurants in Asbury Park’s Second Avenue Pavilion. They include Langosta Lounge, The Asbury Park Yacht Club bar, Lightly Salted Surf Mercado store, Libby’s Beach Shack, a casual seafood fast-food restaurant, and Pop’s Garage, a Mexican restaurant.
She also owns the Labrador Lounge restaurant, a vacation hot spot in Normandy Beach, and another Pop’s location in Shrewsbury.
Schlossbach ‘s entry brings the total number of residents seeking a seat on the council to nine.
Voters last year approved a change of government referendum, which requires a new governing body to be elected this November. Current council was sworn in July 1.
The change moved moved the city’s non-partisan municipal elections from May to November.
One candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the popular vote to be elected mayor. If no candidate gets over 50 percent of the vote on election day, the top two candidates will go head-to-head in a runoff election four weeks later. That will require the winner get a majority, either in the first round or the runoff.
At least two council members must win more than 50 percent of the popular vote. If fewer than two candidates win 50 percent of the popular vote, there are provisions for a runoff to be held in December.
Schlossbach will run against eight other candidates for one of four council seats. They are Amy Quinn, Joe Woerner, Jesse “Coach K” Kendle, and Barbara “Yvonne” Clayton of the “Asbury Together” ticket, and Duanne Small, Rosetta “Ella” Johnson, Derrick Grant, and Kenneth Saunders, Jr. of the “A-Team” ticket.
Elections will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4. If necessary, runoffs will be held Dec. 2, according to City Clerk Steve Kay.
