For one more weekend swimmers can take advantage of at least two Asbury Park beaches lifeguards will be on duty — without having to pay for beach access.

On Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7, at least 12 lifeguards will be on patrol unless it rains, according to Garrett Giberson, Sr., Asbury Park’s beach utility manager. The city does not charge a fee for beach access past Labor Day.

Lifeguards will monitor all beaches and direct beachgoers to at least two areas where they can swim under the watchful eyes of posted guards in at least two locations, one north and one south of Convention Hall, Giberson said.

Although the final revenue figures won’t be available until early next week, Giberson estimates the summer season pulled in at least $1.25 million in beach revenue for the city.

“Getting over $1 million is what we’ve been doing over the last three years,” he said, with last year’s total topped out at $1,000,055.

Giberson attributes the healthy revenue stream to good weather, clean beaches, and Asbury Park’s growing status as a destination among shore towns, he said.

Beach storage boxes will remain at their locations but must be cleaned out by Oct. 15, he said. Renewal letters will begin to be mailed in March of 2015.
