Independent mayoral candidate Harold Suggs and council members of the Asbury Together ticket won the top ballot positions in today’s ballot drawing at City Hall.

City Clerk Stephen Kay pulled cards from a box to determine the ballot positions. Several of the council candidates were in attendance. Prior to the drawing, Kay read all of the names aloud to ensure candidates running on a ticket were grouped together correctly on the ballot with their running mates.

Suggs and incumbent Mayor Myra Campbell are running independently for Mayor. Remond Palmer and incumbent Councilman John Moor are also in the running to be mayor. Both are running on tickets with four council members — Palmer on the A-Team ticket, and Moor on the Asbury Together ticket.

On the ballot, candidates’ campaign slogans will be noted next to their names, Kay said.

The Asbury Park municipal election candidates will not be listed in the columns on the November ballot among the state and county partisan races, but will in a box to the lower right of the ballot, according to Bertha Sumick, county clerk of elections.

Asbury Park voters approved a change of government referendum in the last November general election, which cut short the terms of all five seated council members. The referendum was placed on the ballot by the city’s charter study commission. For the first time, each voter will be able to directly select one mayor and four council members.

The election’s five winners will be sworn in on January 1. At the swearing-in ceremony, the four winning council members will draw straws to determine which two will serve full, four-year terms and which two will serve two-year terms, as staggered terms were part of the terms of the change. Previous elections saw all five council members run for full terms and decide themselves who would be mayor.

The placement on the November 4 ballot will be as follows:

For mayor:

Harold Suggs — Representing the other 1/2

John Moor — Asbury Together

Myra Campbell — Mayor Campbell

Remond Palmer — A-Team

For council:

Amy Quinn — Asbury Together

Jesse “Coach K” Kendle — Asbury Together

Joe Woerner — Asbury Together

Barbara “Yvonne” Clayton — Asbury Together

Duanne Small — A-Team

Rosetta “Ella” Johnson — A-Team

Kenneth E. Saunders, Jr. — A-Team

Derrick Grant — A-Team
