Goldie’s vegan restaurant and bar to close
Was state's first vegan restaurant with a liquor license
Vegan restaurant Goldie’s will shut its doors after service on Sunday.
The eatery is one of the four restaurants in Asbury Park owned and operated by Smith Group.
The high-end restaurant with exposed kitchen opened the in the summer of 2013 as New Jersey’s first vegan restaurant with a liquor license, as previously reported in the Sun.
Smith junior partner Mark Hinchliffe said the group is ascertaining what other cities the Goldie’s brand could relocate, including New York City.
The restaurant saw a few menu changes while in operation, the last being a Mexican themed menu for the summer season. However, the ethnic nature of the food options could also change along with the location, as long as the food is prepared and served devoid of any animal products.
“Anything that interests us that we can translate into a vegan theme is what the brand is,” Hinchliffe said.
Smith signed a three year contract on the space located in the 550 Cookman Avenue suites, Hinchliffe said. The group is looking into possibilities to “experiment” on a new idea within the space, but no definitive decisions have been made and some interior renovations would likely occur, he said.
Following the Sunday service, the restaurant will host a farewell dinner party on Tuesday. Tickets to the five course dinner cost $50 per person and include a welcome cocktail.
Smith also owns and operates Porta Pizza, Brickwall tavern and Pascal and Sabine in Asbury Park. The group has recently opened restaurants in Jersey City and Newark, as well as buying property in Burlington City with the aim of opening restaurants there.
