Policeman injured in knife incident on Main Street
Through traffic closed from Summerfield to Asbury Avenue
At least one police officer and one civilian were transported to area hospitals following an incident that took place Monday morning in the city.
Deputy Chief Anthony Salerno said one officer was injured in a knife incident while responding to a call in the area. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital, Salerno said. He referred all other questions to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Charles Webster, spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, did confirm a shooting also took place at the site but said details about the incident are still being gathered.
Another civilian was also taken away in an ambulance, according to several bystanders who did not see the incident take place but gathered after they heard sirens. They declined to be identified.
The incident took place before 10 a.m. near the Family Dollar store, located at 623 Main Street.
Main Street is closed to through traffic between Summerfield and Asbury avenues as members from the Asbury Park Police Department and the prosecutor’s conduct an investigation.
This is a developing story.
