APTV to host debate-style election forums next week
Asbury Park candidates for city council, board of ed will attend
Asbury Park’s Cable Television Advisory Committee will host candidates’ forums for individuals who seek election in the Nov. 4 municipal and board of education races, according to a news release from the organization.
On Tuesday, Oct. 21, Asbury Park board of education candidates will go head-to-head in a debate-style election forum presented by APTV and sponsored by the Asbury Park Education Association.
On Wednesday, Oct. 22, Asbury Park City Council candidates will debate issues that affect the city, followed by a separate forum for candidates in the city’s mayoral race.
Asbury Park voters approved a change of government referendum in the last November general election, which cut short the terms of all five seated council members. The referendum was placed on the ballot by the city’s charter study commission. It is the first time in the city’s history the voting public will directly elect their mayor.
All three of these forums will begin at 7 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Harold Daley Post #133, located at 701 Lake Ave. The League of Women Voters, Ocean Township chapter, is moderating the debates.
Residents are encouraged to go to AsburyParkTV.org to submit questions for the moderators to ask the candidates.
Anyone who is unable to attend the forums will be able to view a televised recording of the forums beginning Oct. 27 on Cablevision channels 77 and 116, or on Verizon channels 28 and 30.
APTV was created by a resolution adopted by the Asbury Park City Council on Dec. 5, 2012. The committee’s purpose is to act as the city’s advocate and to make recommendations to the mayor and city council in regard to all matters related to the operation of the city’s public, educational and government channels, and to respond to any and all related matters as requested by the mayor and council.
APTV provides broadcasts that respond to the interests and concerns of the community and presents programming that highlights issues and showcases matters relating to Asbury designed to inform, educate and entertain.
