Help erect city’s first urban farm Saturday
Inaugural Harvest Festival takes place afterward
The inaugural Asbury Park Harvest Festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at the northwest corner of Springwood and Atkins avenues, according to a news release from Interfaith Neighbors.
The day starts with the construction of 28 raised beds on the Kula Urban Farm project site at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are welcome to come pitch in. They will be put into teams led by team coordinators to employ an assembly line approach to building the beds, the release stated.
At 11 a.m. the Harvest Festival kicks off across the street from the café and urban farm project site, on the Springwood Park site. Vendors from local artisan market Asbury Fresh will also set up shop and offer demonstrations and talks on their products. Festivities conclude at 4 p.m.
The Chuck Lambert Band will perform and affordable meals will be available at the Kula Cafe.
Community members are invited to come out and enjoy the fun.
“The event will be a great opportunity to promote the importance of incorporating healthy foods in your diet, and local eating during a time of year when fresh produce is in abundance,” Kula Urban Farm Manager Nicholas Silverman said in the release. Silverman will oversee day-to-day operation of the farm.
The Gannett Company is sponsoring the festival in collaboration with Interfaith Neighbors and Asbury Fresh as a community-wide celebration of the season fostering an appreciation for fresh, local food and the spirit of volunteerism.
